Facebook; Good or Bad ?
According to the website, http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/1213/p13s01-legn.html, Facebook has become one of the largest social networking tool for college students across the country. I beleive that Facebook can be used in an academic setting to a certain extent. All universities know that the majority if not all their students have a profile on facebook. They most likely check their profiles a lot more than their own university email; knowing all of this campuses across the country can send out different messages, alerting the students of anything from an emergency on campus to a social gathering happening later that night on campus. The only downfall to this such action would be an invasion of privacy. If the school is allowed to look at each student's profile and finds pictures or facts about the student that could lead to suspension; can they take such actions. Deciding whether Facebook should be used in an academic setting is a slippery slope that will be debated for years to come.

Good job, Tyler! And great question about whether or not the school is allowed to act upon their findings by searching profiles. I understand how employers would search profiles to see whom they'd be hiring (not that I agree) but for a school to dole reprimands for such content is interesting. In highschool we acquired a new track coach (a very very bad track coach) and my friend posted something to that extent on her myspace. The track coach (not much older than us) had a myspace of her own and found that post and from that wrote up a referrel for my friend--the school agreed with the coach and called my friends post "defamation." I don't agree...great question!
ReplyDeleteTyler, I agree with you that Facebook can be both beneficial and harmfull to students. I was a little alarmed by your comment about schools sending emergency alerts via Facebook, but I know that other alerts such as those for campus events can be very convenient when they are posted on Facebook. As far as campuses discriminating against students for content found on their Facebook, I believe that to some extent this can be a good thing. I think that students should be smart about what they post, and schools should also realize that an online profile may not be the best respresentation of a student.
ReplyDeleteI agree schools shouldn't be allowed to see our profiles. They are private but at times good for school.
